A few years ago, I worked alongside a teacher who did something I still think about often. One of her students, a quiet little boy with two younger sisters, came into care. She wasn’t a foster parent. She wasn’t even licensed. She was a newlywed, still figuring out her own new marriage, when she got the call asking if she’d consider taking all three kids so they could stay together.
She said yes.
There was no manual for what came next. No binder waiting on her kitchen counter with the caseworker’s number already filled in, or a place to jot down which sibling had the allergy and which one needed the 504 plan. She was building the plane while flying it — juggling a new husband, a new home, and three children who needed stability more than anything else in the world, all while learning an entirely new language of acronyms, court dates, and case plans she’d never had reason to learn before.
She adopted all three. They’re almost grown now. And every time I think of that family, I think of how much smoother those first, disorienting months could have been with the right tools in hand.
That’s the story behind The Kinship Placement Binder — our newest printable, now available at The Foster Family Collective.
Kinship Care Looks Different — and It Deserves Its Own Resource
Kinship caregivers are grandparents, aunts and uncles, family friends, teachers, neighbors — anyone a child already trusts who steps in when things fall apart. Unlike licensed foster parents, kinship caregivers often get little to no formal preparation. One day you’re living your regular life; the next, you’re a full-time caregiver navigating school enrollment, insurance cards, visitation schedules, and a case plan you didn’t know existed yesterday.
After years of working alongside families like this one, I wanted to build something specifically for them — not a repurposed foster parent guide, but a binder built around the reality of kinship care: the suddenness of it, the love that’s already there, and the very real need for organization in the middle of chaos.
What’s Inside
The Kinship Placement Binder is organized into nine sections designed to meet you exactly where you are, whether that’s hour one or month six:
- Getting Steady, Fast – a First 24 Hours checklist, a “what to gather first” tracker, and a daily quick check-in to help you find your footing
- When Everything Changed – a place to capture the details from day one, before they slip away
- Health – medical care, insurance, medications, and wellness tracking, including a full med log
- School – contacts, IEP/504 tracking, communication logs, and academic progress
- Legal – a plain-language walkthrough of legal pathways (kinship placement, guardianship, adoption), a court tracker, and a documents checklist
- Family Connections – visitation tracking and tools for maintaining healthy relationships with parents and extended family
- Daily Life – routines, chore charts, and household information
- The Child’s Pages – an “All About Me” page, a milestone tracker, and a memory keeper that belongs to the child, not just the file
- Caring for Yourself, Too – because no one can pour from an empty cup, including a support system tracker and a well-being check-in
There’s also an appendix of national kinship resources and a glossary of the acronyms you’ll hear constantly and understand instantly — CASA, GAL, ICPC, TPR — because nobody should have to Google their way through a conversation about their own child’s case.
Built to Be Used, Not Just Printed
Every page carries the same message we hope you’ll actually believe: you don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to show up. This binder isn’t about doing kinship care perfectly — it’s about giving you one less thing to hold in your head so you have more room to hold the child in front of you.
Print what you need. Skip what you don’t. Come back to it as things change, because they will.
For Every Family Who Says Yes
Not every kinship caregiver becomes a permanent home the way that teacher did. Some placements are temporary, some are a bridge to reunification, some become forever. But every single one starts with someone saying yes to a child they already love, often with far less preparation than they deserve.
This binder is for all of them.
The Kinship Placement Binder is available now at The Foster Family Collective Etsy shop — instant download, print at home, and use it your way.
